A minimum deposit of $1000.00 is required to open a Certificate of Deposit.  The minimum deposit requirement is reduced to $500.00 for customers age 16 and under.  A substantial penalty may be imposed for early withdrawals on Certificates of Deposit. All types of bank deposits are insured by FDIC. The basic insured amount for a depositor is $250,000.00. It is possible for you to have more than $250,000.00 insurance coverages in a single institution if the funds are owned and deposited in different ownership categories. In addition federal law provides for insurance coverages for up to $250,000.00 for "self-directed" retirement accounts.
